About Us

Project Linus  Onondaga NY

Project Linus is a volunteer non-profit national organization with a two-fold mission. First, it is our mission to provide love a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers”. Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children. See www.ProjectLinus.org for more information on Project Linus nationally.

Since September of 2000, when the Onondaga County Chapter was started, until January 2024 a total of 29,000 blankets, afghans and quilts have been delivered to children who needed a “special hug”.

We donate to the following agencies,

Area Hospitals, including Galisano Children's Hospital, Community, University

Hospice, grief counseling for children who have lost a loved one

Hope for Bereaved

TAPS – a camp for children who have lost a parent on active duty in the military

Hutchings Psychiatric Center

McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center

Salvation Army Homeless Shelter

Do you knit? Crochet? Quilt? Or make tie fleece blankets? Join us and make a difference in a child's life. The blankets must be smoke free, perfume free, new, handmade, and washable. They should be made from cottons, flannel, polar fleece or acrylic yarn. Fabrics should be “kid friendly” and appropriate for the size of the quilt.

Suggested size guidelines for blankets are:

Infant = 36” x 36”

Toddler = 36” x 40”

Grade School = 45” x 50”

Teen = 45” x 60”, 50”x60” and larger

Our greatest need is usually teen boys.

Patterns for blanket ideas for fleece, knitters, quilters, crocheters are available at www.projectlinus.org .

There are several drop off points for Project Linus Blankets. Please put all blankets in a plastic bag with a note of your name. Be sure your bag is labeled for “Project Linus” on the outside of the bag.
